Chile has announced it has extended its border closure through June 15 to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including virus variants.

Key Points:

  • Borders are to remain closed until June 15; foreign nationals will not be allowed to enter the country during this time.
  • Chilean and foreign nationals will be prohibited from leaving the country for the duration of the border closure with narrow exceptions for extreme cases.
  • Exceptions can be requested online but will only be available for cases such as needing to travel for medical treatment, departing Chile without the intention to return or humanitarian reasons.

Additional Information: All existing COVID-19 related restrictions remain in place and will continue to be enforced. This extension follows the guidelines set in the original border closure.

Analysis & Comments: Chile will continue to enforce its strict entry and travel restrictions until at least June 15. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, and Deloitte will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
