Italian authorities have issued a decree to extend the validity of certain documents and place new limits on travel from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.

Key Points:

  • Identity documents that expired on or before Jan. 31, 2020, are extended until Sept. 30, 2021.
  • Residence permits expired on or before April 30, 2021, are extended to July 31, 2021.
  • Entry is suspended for travelers who have stayed or transited in Bangladesh, India or Sri Lanka 14 days before intended travel with exceptions for:
    • Italian citizens resident in Italy before April 29.
    • Individuals authorized by the Ministry of Health or in compliance with validated health protocols.
  • Those who are exempt must:
    • Present a self-certification if required (or present a Passenger Locator Form).
    • Submit a negative swab test within 72 hours prior to their flight.
    • Repeat the swab test at the airport of arrival.
    • Quarantine for 10 days in a COVID-19 hotel or other facility designated by the Italian health authorities.
    • Repeat the swab test at the end of the 10 days of mandatory quarantine.

Additional Information: The previous provisions relating to India and Bangladesh have been replaced by the new rules. All other previous travel restrictions currently in effect have been extended until May 15.

Analysis & Comments: The new decree will significantly limit travel from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka to Italy.
