Italian authorities have extended existing travel restrictions for travelers from Brazil until March 5, but have carved out exemptions for residents and certain officials.

Key Points:

  • Most air travel from Brazil will remain suspended until at least March 5. Entry is prohibited to travelers who have been in Brazil in the 14 days before attempting to enter Italy.
  • Exemptions to the Brazil travel restrictions have been have been granted to individuals who held residence in Italy before Feb. 13, 2021, and officials and agents, e.g., European Union officials or foreign diplomats. These travelers must provide a negative swab test taken within 72 hours before their flight, repeat the swab test upon arrival at the airport, quarantine for 14 days upon arrival and take another swab test at the end of their quarantine.
  • The entry ban also does not apply to flight crew or other travel personnel. These travelers must take a swab test upon arrival, if possible, or within 48 hours of entering Italy.

Analysis & Comments: Employers and workers should expect travel from Brazil to Italy to be strictly limited for the time being.
