Chile has extended its border closures and quarantines in Santiago and two other areas.

Key Points:

  • The temporary Santiago quarantine has been extended in 38 communes of the Metropolitan region until June 12.
  • The quarantine in Iquique and Alto Hospicio has also been extended until June 12, but the Lonquimay commune quarantine will end June 5.
  • Chile’s border closures have been extended until June 10 as well.

Background: Chile’s first COVID-19 restrictions were implemented at the beginning of March. The initial border closure for most inbound travelers was put into place the third week of March, and the travel suspension was extended the first week of April. Santiago was temporarily locked down the third week of May and some public services remained limited.

Analysis & Comments: Employers should anticipate significant disruptions to employee mobility and arrange travel schedules for affected travelers accordingly. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, and Deloitte will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
