Visa rules relaxed for Indian, Ukrainian nationals

What is the change? Japan has announced several changes that relax the visa requirements for Indian and Ukrainian nationals.

What does the change mean? Beginning in January, Indian nationals will benefit from a simplified visa application and expanded eligibility for multiple-entry visas to Japan. Ukrainian nationals will be eligible for longer duration multiple-entry visas for business travel and multiple-entry visas for tourists and others.

• Implementation time frame: Jan. 1.
• Visas/permits affected: Multiple-entry visas.
• Who is affected: Indian and Ukrainian nationals applying for the visas listed above.
• Business impact: Applicants for multiple-entry visas will not need to produce an employment certificate or explanation letter stating the reason for their application; instead, those traveling for business must show proof of their affiliation with an enterprise.

Background:  Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the following changes:

• Indian nationals will have a simplified visa application for multiple-entry visas, requiring only three documents: a passport, a visa application form (with photo), and a document proving financial sufficiency (for tourists) or proving affiliation with certain enterprises (for business travelers). Currently, applicants must submit an employment certificate and a letter stating why they need a multiple-entry visa.
• Indian nationals who have traveled to Japan two or more times in the previous year will be eligible for multiple-entry visas that are valid for five years, and up to 90 days per visit. These individuals may apply by submitting only the visa application form and passport.
• Ukrainian nationals will be eligible for multiple-entry visas for business purposes that are valid for five years instead of the current three years.
• Ukrainian nationals may also apply for multiple-entry visas for short-term stays for various purposes including tourism, valid for three years with a maximum stay of 30 days per visit.
• Ukrainian applicants for visas for short-term stays will no longer need to submit a guarantor letter if they are self-sufficient.
