United States | New USCIS asylum office in Atlanta now open for applicant interviews

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced the opening of an Atlanta Asylum Office. On July 8, 2026, the office began conducting interviews for affirmative asylum applicants at three locations. The Atlanta Asylum Office is expected to move into a permanent location in 2027.

Key takeaways:

New office covers Alabama and Georgia. According to the announcement, “Aliens filing for asylum and aliens who have already filed for asylum who are under the jurisdiction of the Atlanta Asylum Office, which covers Georgia and Alabama, will have their interview scheduled at one of these locations.”

Three locations identified for conducting interviews. Currently, interviews will be conducted at a temporary Atlanta location, the USCIS Atlanta Field Office and the USCIS Montgomery Field Office in Alabama. The physical and mailing addresses for the Atlanta Asylum Office can be found here.

Appointment-only interviews. Applicants should carefully review interview notices about where to appear, as all services are by appointment only and asylum offices do not accept walk-ins.

Additional information: As reported by BAL in April, USCIS posted alerts on its asylum-related pages stating that, effective May 18, 2026, attorneys and accredited representatives are generally required to appear in person at affirmative asylum interviews, with limited exceptions for remote participation.
