COVID-19: “Business Track” and “Residence Track” travel framework to be suspended

The Japanese government will suspend the “Business Track” and “Residence Track” travel framework for all countries/regions covered by it until the state of emergency is lifted.

Key Points:

• The new entry of foreign nationals into Japan under these two tracks will not be permitted, and the relaxation of restrictions on movement during 14-day quarantine period under the “Business Track” will no longer be permitted for Japanese nationals and foreign nationals with the status of residence until the state of emergency declaration is lifted.
• Holders of valid visas already issued under the “Business Track” or “Residence Track” framework are in principle permitted to enter Japan until 12.00 a.m. (JST) on Jan. 21, except for those who have stayed in the U.K. or South Africa in the last 14 days prior to their arrival in Japan. Background: Japan suspended entry for travelers from many countries from Dec. 28, 2020, until the end of January because of surges in the number of COVID-19 cases in various nations and the spread of the new COVID-19 variant in the U.K. and South Africa.

Analysis & Comments: The suspension of the “Business Track” and “Residence Track” travel framework will restrict the movement of certain people into Japan for the time being. Employers who wish to send employees to Japan may wish to consult with Deloitte to discuss their plans.
