IMPACT – MEDIUM

Japan has moved to suspend measures that allowed travelers from all countries to enter the country beginning Oct. 1.

Key Points:

  • From Dec. 28, 2020, until the end of January 2021, travelers from “Level 3” countries are not allowed to enter Japan. Travelers from “Level 2” countries are still allowed entry.
  • All foreign nationals who stayed in the United Kingdom (from Dec. 24, 2020) and South Africa (from Dec. 26, 2020) within 14 days prior to submitting the application of landing with this framework will be denied to enter Japan until further notice. One exception exists for foreign or Japanese nationals with the status of residence arriving in Japan from the U.K., who are also required to submit a written pledge to the airport quarantine officer.

Background: The phased measures for resuming cross-border travel were first announced in October.

Analysis & Comments: The suspension will temporarily halt travel to Japan for many people. Those with urgent travel needs are urged to work closely with Deloitte. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop, and Deloitte will provide additional updates as information becomes available.
