Hong Kong authorities have reminded residents born from 1996 to 2000 to apply for a new smart identity card before Dec. 10.

Key Points:

  • Residents born from 1996 to 2000 must apply for a new smart identity card at a designated replacement location from Oct. 7 to Dec. 10.
  • A list of designated replacement locations is available here.
  • Residents can schedule an appointment Monday through Saturday (except public holidays), 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through this website or this mobile app.
  • Residents who are abroad during their eligible replacement period will have 30 days after they return to Hong Kong to apply for replacement of their cards.
  • Residents born before 1996 can still apply for the new smart identification card; however, they may be fined for applying past the deadline.

Additional Information: Hong Kong authorities remain on schedule to complete the four-year initiative to replace all smart identity by the beginning of 2023. More information regarding the initiative is available here.
