IMPACT – MEDIUM

The Costa Rican government has introduced an online portal for immigration and visa requests called “TramiteYa!” The online system is meant to shorten processing times and serve as a one-stop-shop for immigration requests.

Key Points:

  • Foreign nationals and Costa Rican citizens must create an account on the TramiteYa! website before using it. Once they do so, they can submit and manage one or multiple immigration requests online.
  • An applicant’s legal documents can be stored on the portal. Payments for fees will also be accepted online.
  • Eventually, the site will process all visa and residency requests. At this time, only certain categories, such as permanent residence and marriage visa, are being processed. Other categories will be added in staggered phases.
  • The website is meant to be used for new immigration requests. Applications that have already been submitted will be processed as normal.

Background: In-person immigration appointments can still be made after Nov. 30 when the General Immigration Directorate (DGME) reopens. Services are currently suspended because of COVID-19.

Analysis & Comments:
The online platform is expected to decrease wait times and avert the need to travel or apply for immigration services in person.
