IMPACT — MEDIUM

The Belgian government recently extended temporary protection to Ukrainian nationals until April 2024.

Key Points:

  • Ukrainian nationals living in Belgium can now extend their temporary protection until March 31, 2024, if they hold a residence card set to expire on or before March 4, 2023.
  • Beginning Jan. 4, 2023, Ukrainian nationals must visit their local town hall to submit a request to receive the extension.
  • Ukrainian nationals who do not submit a request to extend their status at their local town hall will not receive the temporary protection extension.

BAL Analysis: Under the directive, temporary protections will cover Ukrainian nationals who fled the war in Ukraine for an extended period of time. Employers and employees are reminded that actions taken as a result of the invasion of Ukraine may change with little or no notice.
