Measures to reduce new, renewal passport processing implemented

The Canadian government has implemented new measures to reduce processing delays for new and renewal passport applications.

Key Points:

• Applicants who hold passports that were issued in the last 15 or have passports that have been lost, stolen or damaged can apply for a new passport under simplified procedures. Such individuals are no longer required to provide their original documents, including proof of citizenship or photo identification.
• Travelers who need a passport within two business days must visit one of the Service Canada Centers – Passport Service offering pick-up services. Travelers must have proof of travel.
• Those traveling within 25 business days can use the walk-in service at a one of the 35 specialized Service Canada Centers – Passport Service. Travelers must have proof of travel for walk-in services.
• People who are traveling in more than 25 days with no specific travel date can visit any of the Service Canada centers or mail in their applications.
• Individuals can book an appointment to renew their passports through this website.

Additional Information: Those applying for new or renewal passports should expect processing delays due to an “unprecedented volume of applications and the obligation to impose in-person capacity limits” at processing centers.

BAL Analysis: Service Canada is seeing an increase of passport applications due to the lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions around the world. Canadian citizens intending to travel abroad and in need of a new passport should renew their passport as soon as possible to avoid delays and complications.
