Recent trends and updates in the Asia-Pacific region

  • Asia accounts for a disproportionate share of the world’s young, working age population, driving significant migration both to other regions and within Asia.
  • Japan and South Korea have seen rapid growth in immigrant populations despite restrictive systems. In 2023, more than half of all registered foreign nationals in both countries held temporary visas.
  • In July 2025, Vietnam began requiring companies and individuals to obtain electronic identity accounts for several administrative processes.
  • In November 2025, Australia expanded access to its Immi App to eligible visa applicants from 34 countries, eliminating the need for in-person visits to biometric collection centers.
  • China’s National Immigration Initiative has introduced several new immigration and entry-exit management services to streamline global travel procedures.
  • India’s Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, aims to modernize India’s immigration framework with simpler visa processes, stricter compliance rules and enhanced security measures.
