Temporary Protected Status extended for Yemen

The Department of Homeland Security announced today that it has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Yemen who qualify for the program.

Key points:

• Temporary Protected Status for Yemen will be extended 18 months, through March 3, 2020.
• Additional information about the extension, including information about the TPS reregistration process, is expected soon and will be published in the Federal Register.

Background: The U.S. first designated Yemen for TPS in 2015 and the designation was most recently extended on Jan. 4, 2017. In a statement, DHS said that the armed conflict in Yemen and “extraordinary and temporary conditions” that support Yemen’s TPS designation are ongoing, thus supporting the 18-month extension. DHS will review conditions in Yemen at some point before March 3, 2020 to determine whether TPS should be extended again or terminated. About 1,250 Yemenis are TPS beneficiaries in the U.S.

BAL Analysis: The Trump administration has moved to end TPS designation for a number of countries, including El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Sudan. The decision to extend TPS for Yemen and Syria reflects DHS’s conclusion that those two countries remain extremely dangerous.
