Immigration News - Global mobility, Work authorization, United States Spain | Government approves measure granting legal status to foreign nationals, effective April 16 Share this article LinkedIn Facebook X (Twitter) April 15, 2026 The Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration approved a royal decree granting residence and work authorization to foreign nationals currently residing in Spain, effective April 16, 2026. As previously reported, the measure underwent a public comment period after the initial announcement. Key takeaways: The application period is open April 16, 2026, through June 30, 2026. Qualified individuals may submit applications online or schedule an in-person appointment starting April 16, 2026. In-person processing service begins April 20, 2026. According to the measure, foreign nationals currently residing in Spain are eligible for a residence permit if they meet the following requirements: Prove stay in Spain began before Jan. 1, 2026 Demonstrate proof of continuous residence in Spain for at least five months prior to submitting the application Hold no criminal record nor pose a threat to public order, public safety or public health Applied for international protection or are in an “irregular administrative situation” Individuals meeting these requirements will receive legal residence and work permits valid for one year, after which they must apply for standard residency status under current immigration regulations. Minors are eligible for a five-year residence permit.
