COVID-19: Immigration offices in Mexico City, State of Mexico will remain closed

What is the change? Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) in Mexico City and the State of Mexico (Estado de Mexico) announced that immigration offices will remain closed until Feb. 7 because of the current COVID-19 “red light” status in these jurisdictions.

What does the change mean? All immigration services processed by these offices will be paused during the closure.

• Implementation time frame: INM offices are shut down until Feb. 7.
• Visas/permits affected: Any immigration petitions being processed by these offices will be impacted.
• Who is affected: Foreign nationals working or living in Mexico or their employers who have ongoing immigration applications before the INM.
• Business impact: Companies should anticipate delays in processing times with any pending applications housed in these locations.

Background: Immigration offices in Mexico City and Estado de Mexico first closed its offices due to COVID-19 restrictions in January.

Analysis & Comments: Mexico City and Estado de Mexico are currently in “red light” status, as part of Mexico’s traffic light system for classifying risk level for COVID-19 spread. Red is the most severe and includes the most restrictions. The classifications are re-evaluated daily. Employers and individuals with pending matters with INM in Mexico City and Estado de Mexico should monitor the COVID-19 classification system.
