IMPACT – HIGH
What is the change? The deadline for Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card holders to convert to Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards has been extended to June 30.
What does the change mean? PIO card holders have additional time to convert to an OCI card, as the Ministry of Home Affairs has announced a new deadline to submit the application for this process.
Background: Previously, the Indian authorities set the deadline for Sept. 30, 2015, but later extended it to March 31, 2016. The ministry has now decided to give more time to PIO card holders to submit their applications for registration as an OCI card holder.
BAL Analysis: At this time, the authorities have yet to make the process mandatory. However, it is recommended that PIO cardholders complete the conversion to OCI cards in order to avoid travel interruptions. Applicants should check with their local FRRO office, overseas mission or consulate on specific procedures and requirements, as procedures may vary.
