Transitory permanence permit laws amended

The Chilean government has amended laws governing its transitory permanent permit and related subcategories.

Key Points:

• Foreign nationals who hold a transitory permanence permit can no longer change their migratory status from “Tourist” to “Resident.” Transitory permanence permit holders will not be able to apply for a residence permit unless they have proof they are a family member of a Chilean national or permanent resident.
• Transitory permanence permit holders must now have proof that they can financially support themselves throughout the duration of their stay in Chile. Authorities will calculate the amount needed based on the duration and reasons for stay in Chile.
• Transitory permanence permit holders can now request authorization to perform specific work activities through the Immigration Department’s online platform.

Additional Information: Subcategories under the transitory permanence permits that are affected by the changes include foreigners who enter the country for recreational, sports, health, studies, business management, family or other similar purposes; permits for foreigners living in border zones; and permissions for conditional entry.
