Applications tightly scrutinized as Myanmar prepares for new government

Background: Myanmar held elections Nov. 8, with Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy winning an overwhelming victory. Pending the change in government, immigration applications are facing increased scrutiny. Requirements are being strictly enforced, and in some cases new procedures may be added.

For example, applications for stay permits and multiple-entry visas sponsored by companies that are registered with the Myanmar Investment Commission now require the applicant’s valid labor registration card, which adds an additional step to the overall process. For renewals, a tax payment slip must now be included with the application. Applications without the appropriate supporting documentation will be returned. The requirement does not apply to company directors listed on the Form 26, nor does the requirement apply to companies registered with the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration.

Officers in all government departments are adhering strictly to prescribed rules and regulations, pending the handover of power to the new government.
