IMPACT – MEDIUM
What is the change? Egypt has imposed a new requirement that nationals of certain countries must register with local authorities within seven days of their arrival.
What does the change mean? Nationals of Algeria, India, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Philippines, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey must register with immigration authorities or a police station with an immigration department desk within seven days of arrival regardless of their immigration status. Immigration authorities have also said that nationals of most East Asian countries will be subject to the requirement, but have not published an official list of nationalities.
Background: When registering, individuals should be prepared to provide the passport they used to enter Egypt. Those who fail to register properly may face delays when leaving Egypt, difficulty obtaining a residency visa, and fines ranging from 350 to 1,500 Egyptian pounds (about US$20 to US$85).
BAL Analysis: Employers should make sure that employees know of the requirement and take the necessary steps to register upon arriving in Egypt.
