What is the change? Japan recently restricted inbound travel from an additional 17 countries and territories to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

What does the change mean?
Foreign nationals who have visited the following countries/territories within the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter Japan: Botswana, Comoros, Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Namibia, Nepal, the Palestinian territories, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Suriname, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

  • Implementation time frame: The restrictions took effect July 24.
  • Visas/permits affected: Any visa used to enter Japan.
  • Who is affected: Travelers from the 17 additional countries/territories.
  • Business impact: Employees from the affected countries/territories will be restricted from entering Japan for the time being.

Background: Japan began restricting entry of foreign nationals in February. The total number of restricted countries and regions is now 146.
