What is an F-1 student visa? The F-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for foreign nationals pursuing full-time academic study or language training at a school certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The academic program must lead to a degree, diploma or certificate. F-1 status can also provide limited employment opportunities that support a student’s education and career development. The rules differ by timing, type of work and authorization required, making early planning important for students, schools and employers.
