Japan | New residence permit fees and payment methods effective Oct. 1

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency published details on new fee structures for immigration and residence-related applications.

Revised residence permit fees

Permanent residence application fees will vary based on the period of stay granted. If filed online, lower fees apply to periods of stay exceeding three months.

The revised fees apply only to applications submitted on or after Oct. 1, 2026. Applications submitted by Sept. 30, 2026, will remain subject to current fee structures, even if the application is approved after Oct. 1.

Updated payment methods for application fees

Effective Oct. 1, applicants using Japan’s online residence application system will be required to make payments only through:

• Convenience store payment
• Bank transfer, including internet banking options

Credit card and QR code payments will not be accepted online. For applications submitted in person at immigration offices, revenue stamps will continue to be required.

Fee reductions and exemptions

Eligible applicants experiencing significant financial hardship may qualify for reduced fees. Certain applicants, including diplomatic and official status holders and specific designated activity categories, may qualify for fee exemptions. Fee reduction requests are not eligible for applications filed online and must be submitted in person.
