What is the change? Japan has opened the registration period for its new online application system.
What does the change mean? Employers or their immigration agents can now register to use the system. Applications will be accepted through the system beginning July 25.
Background: Japan is introducing the new online system under the sweeping new immigration bill the country’s legislature passed in December. The system will be open to employers who have completed registration requirements, have no immigration or labor violations in the past five years and have sponsored foreign workers in the past three years. The online system will be available 24 hours a day and is only accessible in Japan.
Analysis & Comments: The online system was designed to save time in the application process. While it will initially be available only for work-permit extension applications, reentry permits and special permission for extra work permission, it will eventually be extended for initial applications. Eligible employers are encouraged to work with their immigration provider to register for the online system. Visa applicants in need of one of the services listed above between now and July 25 will be required to submit a hard-copy application.
