Companies experiencing processing delays, higher scrutiny of work permit applications

What is the update? Costa Rica is experiencing processing delays of up to three months for immigration-related services. Authorities are also more strictly scrutinizing work permit applications.

The specifics:

• Processing delays. Processing of permits and visas for recognized companies is being delayed by up to 90 days.
• Increased scrutiny for foreign executives. Authorities are more heavily scrutinizing educational certificates and qualifications for foreign executives who are applying for work permits. Foreign executives must now list specified positions in their applications (such as a manager, assistant manager, director, assistant directors and specialized technical staff).

Background: Last September, a nationwide strike closed immigration offices in Costa Rica and caused immigration processing delays that persist today. Recognized companies, which typically have shorter processing times for permit approval, are especially impacted by the delays and the greater scrutiny when applying for work permits.
