Border officials enforcing passport-validity rule

What is the change? Peru’s border officials are strictly enforcing an existing law that requires travelers’ passports to be valid for at least six months beyond the date of arrival in Peru.

What does the change mean? All foreign nationals must have at least six months of validity remaining on their passport, or risk being denied entry. Nationals of Mercosur and Andean Community of Nations (CAN) member countries are exempt.

• Implementation time frame: Immediate. Enforcement of the rule took effect Jan. 1.
• Visas/permits affected: Entry visas.
• Business impact: Business travelers should factor in additional time to renew their passports if they will expire within six months of their intended travel date to Peru.
• Next steps: Travelers and expatriates in Peru should check their passport validity dates before they plan to travel to, or re-enter, Peru and apply for a new passport if necessary.  

Analysis & Comments: Travelers should anticipate that Migration Authority officers will check their passport validity upon arrival in Peru and that they may turn away travelers whose passports are due to expire within six months of entry.
