Document authentication process now streamlined

What is the change? Guatemala has joined the Hague Convention on the apostilling of documents, a step that will shorten the process of authenticating documents for immigration-related applicants.

What does the change mean? The apostilling process replaces the lengthier legalization process and in most cases can be completed in one day.

• Implementation time frame: Immediate.
• Visas/permits affected: Work and residence permits requiring authentication of documents issued in other Hague Convention countries.
• Who is affected: All nationals submitting foreign-issued documents to Guatemalan authorities.
• Impact on processing times: Document authentication will be faster and can typically be completed the same day, either in person or online.

BAL Analysis: Nationals who need to submit foreign-issued documents to Guatemalan authorities should benefit significantly from the adoption of apostille procedures. The move should significantly shorten the process of authenticating supporting documents, such as educational degrees and marriage and birth certificates.
