Online passport renewal made available

The Japanese government has introduced a new online passport renewal option for qualifying Japanese nationals.

Key Points:

• Japanese nationals can now renew their passports online through this website if:
  • Their passport has less than one year of validity.
  • There are three or fewer empty pages for stamps.
• Individuals will need their My Number Card signature electronic certificate PIN to renew their passport online.
• Passports will be invalidated for those who do not pick up their passport within six months of it being issued.
• Those who are applying for the first time, whose passports have already expired or who have changed their name or address are not eligible for online renewal.

BAL Analysis: Japanese authorities introduced the online passport renewal process to reduce processing times and decrease the number of paper applications. Japanese nationals in need of a new passport should apply as soon as possible to avoid processing delays and complications.
