COVID-19: State of emergency expanded, extended

The Japanese government recently expanded and extended the state of emergency for many of the country’s prefectures.

Key Points:

• Officials extended the state of emergency for Chiba, Kanagawa, Okinawa, Osaka, Saitama and Tokyo prefectures until at least Sept. 12.
• Additionally, officials expanded the state of emergency list to cover the prefectures of Fukuoka, Gunma, Hyogo, Ibaraki, Kyoto, Shizuoka and Tochigi until at least Sept. 12.
• Quasi-emergency measures remain in place for Aichi, Ehime, Fukushima, Gifu, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, Ishikawa, Kagawa, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Mie, Miyagi, Okayama, Shiga, Toyama, and Yamanashi prefectures.
• For prefectures under a state of emergency, the government strongly discourages nonessential travel, non-urgent outings and travel across prefecture lines.

Additional Information: All individuals arriving to Japan, regardless of nationality or departure location, must present a negative PCR test conducted within 72 hours of departure and undergo a 14-day self-quarantine upon arrival.
