Sophia is an Associate Attorney in the Boston office of Berry Appleman & Leiden LLP. She provides strategic counsel to employers and foreign nationals on a broad spectrum of employment-based immigration matters including nonimmigrant visas, PERM labor certification applications, immigrant visa petitions, and adjustment of status applications.
Sophia has been in the immigration law field for over eight years. Prior to joining BAL, she served as a law clerk and associate attorney in the Boston office of a large global immigration law firm, and as an immigration paralegal in several small boutique immigration law firms.
During law school, Sophia focused on immigration law and completed her school’s Immigration Law concentration. She spent a summer volunteering as a clerk in the Boston Immigration Court, where she researched complex issues of removability and eligibility for relief, and assisted Immigration Judges in drafting decisions.
Sophia has also focused on giving back to her community by assisting with several pro bono efforts. These included naturalization clinics, bond hearings, and leading a team as part of a high-profile nationwide collaborative effort on behalf of 92 Somali detainees. Her contributions to the Somali 92 effort were recognized when she received The Advocates for Human Rights 2019 Human Rights Volunteer Award and AILA’s 2019 Arthur C. Helton Memorial Human Rights Award.
