When traveling to Iraq, your nationality and the types of activities you will conduct during your trip will determine whether you may travel lawfully as a business visitor or if you require work authorization. Please seek advice from your immigration counsel if you are uncertain about the specific types of activities that constitute business or work.
What types of activities may I engage in as a business visitor?
As a business visitor to Iraq, you may engage in the activities below. While this list is not exhaustive and other activities could qualify as business, you may:
- » Attend business meetings and negotiations
- » Attend conferences or seminars
- » Receive training
If I qualify as a business visitor, do I need a visa for Iraq?
All foreign nationals are required to obtain a visa in order to engage in business activities in Iraq. Select nationals, including those of the United States, Canada, and European Union member states, are eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at the port of entry for business purposes.
Those not eligible for a Visa on Arrival must obtain an Entry Visa prior to travel from an Iraqi Embassy or Consulate. Please consult with your immigration counsel before traveling to determine your eligibility for a Visa on Arrival or Entry Visa.
What types of activities require work authorization?
Foreign nationals are permitted to engage in business activities, professional activities, and unremunerated work activities in Iraq for up to 10 days without obtaining work authorization. Activities lasting more than 10 days will require a Residence Permit with Work Authorization. Please consult with your immigration provider prior to travel for an individual assessment to determine requirements and ensure compliance.
If I am traveling to Iraq for work, what type of work authorization do I need?
The requirements for work authorization depend on your qualifications, on the nature and duration of your work, and on whether your employer has an entity in Iraq. The most common type of work authorization for Iraq is the Residence Permit with Work Authorization. Please consult with your immigration provider prior to travel for more information regarding the work authorization process and requirements.
Is it possible to be exempted from work authorization requirements?
There are no nationalities who are exempt from work authorization requirements in Iraq.
Inevitably, the legal and strategic considerations impacting visa selection, as well as visa waiver and work authorization eligibility, entail the careful consideration of many factors. We recommend that you consult with your immigration counsel before taking any course of action.
