Assessing Travel and Visa Obligations

When traveling to Gambia, your nationality and the types of activities you will conduct during your trip will determine whether you may travel lawfully as a business visitor or if you must obtain work authorization. Please seek advice from your immigration counsel if you are uncertain about the specific types of activities that constitute business or work.

Traveling for Business

What types of activities may I engage in as a business visitor?

As a business visitor to Gambia, you may engage in the activities below. While this list is not exhaustive and other activities could qualify as business, you may:

  • » Attend business meetings
  • » Execute contracts
  • » Participate in exhibitions or trade fairs
  • » Attend short-term seminars

If I qualify as a business visitor, do I need a visa for Gambia?

Nationals of Canada, the European Union, and other select nationals are eligible for a visa waiver and are not required to obtain a visa to enter Gambia to conduct business activities. If your nationality is not eligible for a visa waiver, an Entry Visa from a Gambian Consulate or Embassy must be obtained prior to travel.

While some foreign nationals may be eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at the port of entry, it is recommended that all visa-required nationals obtain entry authorization prior to travel.

Certain restricted nationalities are required to obtain entry clearance from Gambian immigration authorities before applying for an Entry Visa. Please consult with your immigration counsel before traveling to confirm the list of restricted nationalities.

Working in Gambia

What types of activities require work authorization?

Business visitors are permitted to engage in unremunerated professional activities for a short duration in Gambia without obtaining work authorization, subject to approval by the Gambian immigration authorities. There are no limits on the types of professional activities that may be performed as a business visitor. Please consult with your immigration counsel prior to travel to confirm your eligibility for a short-term work authorization exemption.

If I am traveling to Gambia for work, what type of work authorization do I need?

The requirements for work authorization depend on your qualifications and on the nature and duration of your work. The most common form of work authorization in Gambia is:

  • » Residential Permit under the Permit B category for skilled or unskilled laborers

Is it possible to be exempted from work authorization requirements?

There are no long-term work authorization exemptions available in Gambia.

What else should I know?

Inevitably, the legal and strategic considerations impacting visa selection, as well as visa waiver and work authorization eligibility, entail the careful consideration of many factors. We recommend that you consult with your immigration counsel before taking any course of action.
